EA revealed today that golf Hall of Famer Seve Ballesteros and the current world No. 1 Rory McIlroy will appear alongside Tiger Woods on the European cover of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14. This marks the first time ever in the franchise's 29 year history that three golfers have appeared on the cover. Perhaps it has something to do with Tiger's declining play and the lack of a single dominant player in the current game of golf.
“We are very grateful to EA Sports for remembering and honoring our dear Seve through this fantastic video game,” said Iván Ballesteros, vice president of Seve Ballesteros Foundation. “Not only does this celebrate Seve’s great golf accomplishments, it helps raise awareness to the work we are doing at the Seve Ballesteros Foundation for brain cancer research.”
I'm not going to pretend I know anything about Ballesteros. To be honest, he was way before my time. Thankfully, EA has provided us with a detailed background:
A Spanish golf legend, Ballesteros was one of the dominant forces in golf during the 1970’s and early 1980’s, winning the Masters Tournament twice and the Open Championship three times. Known for his imaginative and intuitive style of play, Ballesteros won a record 50 times on the European Tour and compiled an impressive 91 total professional wins during his career. Ballesteros passed away in 2011, but he is beloved by many and still honored today, and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1999.
McIlroy, on the other hand, I'm a little more familiar with. This is the third time he's shared the cover with Tiger Woods. Woods is currently the world No. 2 and is currently in pursuit of becoming the all-time PGA Tour win leader (74) and major championships leader (14) behind Sam Snead and Jack Nicklaus, respectively.
The inclusion of Ballesteros plays perfectly with the fact that Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 gives you the chance to experience golf's history and allow you to travel back in time and take on some of the greatest legends in the game.
